Plasters & External Renders

There are two finishes for internal walls, hard plaster (a sand and cement mix) or dry lining (a fitted plasterboard).

Hard Plaster
Requires multiple coats of sand and cement render with a finishing coat of smooth plaster. A disadvantage of using this finish is as it is applied wet it will take time to dry.

Dry Lining
Dry lining is fixing plasterboard to the walls and is a dry process. With a timber framed home the plasterboard is tacked directly to the timber studs. When used in traditional masonry construction, it can either be stuck to the walls by means of dabs of plaster or tacked to battening, firmly fixed to the substrate.

External wall finishes:

Renders
Usually carried out with multiple coated renders of sand and cement. The final coat is usually rubbed up with a float or trowel to create a smooth finish. Pebbledash is created by thickening the final coat and then throwing pebbles into the mixture and fixing them in with a trowel.
